Weekly update

This week I have completed filming my product and have finalised the editing. It took roughly a week through booking the Mac and taking it home after school hours to edit. Filming in London was fairly busy as it was a sunny day, however, I did not want to waste an opportunity and so I found ways to work around this. I am satisfied with my product as I think it communicates emotions through that I wished to show, and has a clear narrative. Both actors had their transport paid for, and Michael Douglas was paid for playing his part in my film. It was a success working with them both, as I think their attitudes towards one another was very professional. I would certainly work with them again in the future.

Costume notes

Faith's costume

Throughout the production, Faiths character wears clothing that presents her to be a young woman in her early 20s. She generally wears casual clothing such as jeans and jackets as she is seen to be comfortable around her partner Luke. I also decided this because I know a majority of women in her age group wear similar clothing as this.Important costume choices I made, such as her pink dressing gown, highlighted that she was in the comfort of her own home, and more importantly created a time period for the audience to associate with either being night time or daytime.

Faith also had various hair styles throughout- my intentions with this was to make it very clear that he juxtaposition were a continuation in long time frames- to highlight I was showing fragments of them in separate locations, at separate times as there relationship developed months on.

Makeup: Faith's makeup was important as it created a clear indication of her abuse. It had to look effective and bold enough to notice, as it marked the moment in the film where Luke first hits her. I used a dark bronzer along with dark drown eye shadow to create a bruised effect on her face. I think this worked as it was not overdone and so did not ruin the concept.

Luke's costume

Luke's costume was intended to create an urban and ideal man's attire, with a side bag which is more commonly seen in working class men. There was also important consideration of  costume choices when choosing how to represent the antagonist. Men in their early 20s seen in central London often wear suits as they are working class. Luke's character was not in a high profession, which is why I only gave him smart coats to wear. Furthermore, the only time he is seen in a suit is when he returns home after being fired, in which his tie is loose and twisted- representing him to be untidy.

Luke wears a black vest when he is indoors, which clarify's that he is in his home. Along with this he has grey jogging bottoms, which is very much his informal wear. When he is shown outdoors, I decided to put him in scarfs and smart coats to represent a mature, young man. I decided to use this as it showed a contrast from his less appealing attire indoors, which mirrors his abusive, anti social. behaviour indoors.

Weekly update 2- Shooting plan

This week I plan to do my first shoot with Samantha Green on Tuesday 28th October. I will shoot all her scenes which will take place in tourist sites in Central London, public streets and an apartment in Dagenham Heathway. The shoot will begin at 12pm and take place throughout the day. We will be travelling by train and walking to our destinations. Due to having one actor on this date, I will only focus on the scenes where she is alone, in order to leave the remaining scenes to shoot with my actor Danny at a later date, who is playing Luke. Samantha will have her costumes with her, and she will use public toilets for her to change into for the various scenes. The shoot should be finished by latest 6pm in the evening as there are not many scenes to shoot with her. I will also book the final shoot for both by actors on Sunday 9th November.

Weekly update 1

This week I  managed to book a lunchtime in the studio to  begin recording the voice over of Faith, with my actress Samantha Green. I directed her through the process as she read each verse, indicating to her how I wanted each line to be said. I have now completed the recordings which will play over the footage once I begin filming. With this I added the sound to my music which I have also found, called, Cold, by Jorge Mendez, to gain an insight to the type of feeling it brings. As a result, I am happy with the current sound and style being followed, and I have also had positive feedback from classmates and teachers.

Narrative Theorist- The Break of Faith

My production, ‘The Break of Faith’, is a Drama Thriller. This genre often consists of a narrative that shows a chain of bad events, which I have incorporated following the theorist, Tzvetan Tordorov, who focuses on the equilibrium(the balanced state), the disruption of the equilibrium(the problem the character faces) and the restored equilibrium, where the problem is solved and the balanced state is restored. The disruption of the equilibrium is a main aspect that a drama thriller uses to keep the audience intrigued and uncertain, as the text often revolves around that issue. I will incorporate this by editing the fragments in the style of Tordorov, as the layout of the sequence will be linear and consist of various scenes following the relationship between the two characters., however, the mood will be altered when the relationship suddenly becomes abusive.

The semiotic of the sudden dark theme is an important factor as it will act as the disruption, which will then lead to the mystery element. Furthermore, my narrative also follows the theorist, Roland Barthes, as I will use a reverse edit at the end of the sequence, to the very beginning where my characters first meet. This will make the timeline distorted and abstract, which I think works well as it will make my audience think deeper about the meaning behind the production. It will not overcomplicate the sequence, but only fit well into the narrative as Barthes focuses on the meaning of text, and acknowledges that they are discovered differently by audiences. This is my aim as I understand the genre and style of my production covers a very sensitive topic.

Furthermore, this has influenced my age certification of 15+, as my audience will have to be at a fairly mature age to understand the intensity of the production, and follow the functional and dysfunctional narrative layout.  Barthes also focuses and highlights the mystery element within films, which I believe takes an interest to the majority of those above the age of 15 as they are more willing to be challenged and remain intrigued.

Synopsis

Faith, who is a writer, meets a man called Luke, whom she begins a journey with. As her fate puts her in the eyes of him, she opens up to him after they begin to talk shortly, and find they share similar interests in books and find a lot in common, soon developing a serious relationship. The story follows the couple as time goes on as they begin dating, and committing to each other completely once she moves in with him. However, things turn dark when he loses his job and begins drinking more. As Faith and Luke create memories together, and reach deep lows, Luke’s true colours begin to show, and Faith begins to see a side to him she has never known.  Can Faith’s soul be restored as she questions whether she’d do it all over again in order to relive her happiest moments with Luke?

Cast Profiles

Profile 1

Name: Samantha Green

Gender: Female

Reasons for casting?

Samantha had the right skills for the part of Faith, and had the appropriate features for the character, such as white with dark hair and blue eyes. She also was able to portray the part of a young adult aged 20, and take on the mature challenges that her character faces when auditioning for the role, with the right emotion in mind, which was one of the most important requirements for my cast. Furthermore, Sam was a first choice because she has past experience in acting, which means she’ll be easy to work with on set and follow directions to a satisfactory standard.

Profile 2

Name:  Michael Douglas

Gender:  Male

Reasons for casting?
Michael was given the part of Luke as he had the correct requirements for the role, in features, height and weight. This role was particular as I had to have an actor that appeared to be an average build for a young man, however could convince an audience that he is a danger when playing the role of an abuser. Michael particularly had the skills required to appear aggressive and as a threat when in character, using his face and most importantly, his eye contact. He was able to do this and also tap into the role of the loving boyfriend, as seen in the beginning of my sequence. These factors lead to the casting of Michael, and I look forward to working with him on set.

Planning Brief

Production:
CB Productions

Project name:
The Break of  Faith

Genre:
Drama-Thriller

Reasons for genre:
I chose Drama-Thriller because I enjoy creating tense and chilling moments that may catch the audience by surprise. It also challenges me to make an interesting story-line, incorporating a twist and unsolved mysteries.

Outline:
The Break of Faith is about a writer named Faith, and her relationship with Luke as it starts and as it develops over time. We as an audience will watch their moments together as their love begins to grow over time, and through their arguments and ordinary conflict within a couple. However,  it will take a spin in direction as it becomes a lot less ordinary, and more chilling when Luke behaves differently, paranoid and jealous. The climax will question whether we all will surrender anything for the sake of love.

Target audience:
My target audience are ages 15- 35. This is because the majority of teens visit the cinema and them along with adults take a liking to drama thriller movies, as they can follow and understand the tense themes. Furthermore, the abusive scenes within the film would be inappropriate for ages below 15 to view as they may be affected deeper.

Publishing suggestions:
I will use YouTube to publish my film, Twitter and Facebook. This is linked with the target audience, who are the main users of these social network sites, and so this will be a good way for them to gain access and view my film, possibly also giving a review and feedback, which will come in use for any future films I may produce for this target audience.

Comparable products:
My production is highly influenced by the BBC Three film ' Murdered by my Boyfriend'. It is a comparable product as both films focus on the domestic abuse issue and highlight the decisions as to why there may be people stuck for the sake of love. This film was shown at 10pm on television to target a similar audience, which also has a majority of viewers that are older teens and adults. However, rather than incorporating an immediate death tragedy, I've added an unknown climax, which will allow the audience to interpret in their own way.

Rationale behind my script:
When making my script, there will be a main focus on detail within the stage directions, as I will not incorporate any dialogue. I will focus on the importance of each short scene shown and how it all comes together to influence the final outcome. The voice-over will be displayed clearly in the script in stars (*), so my actress is aware she will be doing a voice recording, rather than speaking live on camera. I've decided to use a voice-over because I want to focus on the bond between the two characters, and leave the speaking only as Faith's own experience and her perception on things, which will hopefully be interesting for the audience to listen to.

How will I test how successful my product is?
I will be using a post questionnaire to gain a response as to whether my product is successful through the results on social networking sites. This would benefit me as I can reach my target audience through the general public and social networks.

Overt message:
The overt message is about domestic abuse and the negative impact it can bring on a person. It sympathises with those who may be victims and how they may become trapped through threat and the unexpected change in behaviour. Things do no always start out as how they seem.

Covert message:
The covert message will mirror Faith's voice-over, as she will talk about the happy moments with Luke and how much a person can make you forgive them because of the hold they have on you, and that things were never always that bad. It's about the hidden voice that keeps you from leaving in such circumstances. which does reflect some people in society. Overall, Faith questions herself and whether she'd do it all over again in order to relive those happiest moments with Luke.

Resource constraints:
One main problem may be finding actors who can fit the criteria, of looking the part and acting to the standard I will need to make my production convincing and affect my audience. Also, it may be challenging to keep the budget at a minimal as I plan to use locations in central London, and travelling will take up time and money. Also,  the equipment will be heavy and so I may need an assistant to help me manage. Furthermore I will need to find committed actors that will be on time and willing to shoot the scenes in various locations, whilst being challenged to create a convincing couple.
